Moving goods by rail often involves transshipment costs, particularly when the shipper or receiver lack direct rail access. However, shipment by rail is not as flexible as by the highway, which has resulted in much freight being hauled by truck, even over long distances. Maximum economies are typically realized with bulk commodities (e.g., coal), especially when hauled over long distances. When considered in terms of ton-miles or tonne-kilometers hauled per unit of energy consumed, rail transport efficiency can be greater than other means of transportation. Rail freight practices and economics vary by country and region. Trains may haul bulk material, intermodal containers, general freight or specialized freight in purpose-designed cars. Rail freight transport is the use of railroads and trains to transport cargo as opposed to human passengers.Ī freight train, cargo train, or goods train is a group of freight cars (US) or goods wagons ( International Union of Railways) hauled by one or more locomotives on a railway, transporting cargo all or some of the way between the shipper and the intended destination as part of the logistics chain. Thereafter, Usha’s father realised the error of his ways and enrolled his daughter into Class 6 in 2019! This would not have been possible without schooling. As a result, they are able to hold these distinguished positions and help their family financially. The unique aspect of this meeting was that all those dignified individuals were women! Dinesh explained to the father that all these women went to school and had degrees. One day, he called the Aanganwadi (rural child-care centre) worker, a school teacher and the village secretary for a meeting with Usha’s father. However, Dinesh refused to give up and had another idea. Though the language is still often stereotypically described as ‘Pidgin English’ or ‘Broken English, it is accepted by most people as a very useful language for public enlightenment campaigns, radio and television programs, inter-ethnic communication, commercial advertizing, sitcoms, stand-up comedies, popular music, religious music and for conducting common everyday business transactions in many parts of the country. But Naijá is not just endemic to the Niger Delta area alone, it is also widely spoken in many of the country’s big cities, tertiary institutions, police and military formations and the sabon-gari areas of northern Nigeria. But in the last twenty or thirty years, Naijá has become one of the most important, most widely spread, and perhaps the most ethnically neutral lingua franca used in the country today.Ĭurrent estimates show that around 5 million people speak Naijá as first language while over 75 million people use it as a second language in Nigeria and in Nigerian Diaspora communities in Europe, America and other parts of the world.Īlthough English is still remains the country’s official language and the language of education in Nigeria, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba prominently feature as regional languages in the northern, eastern and western parts of the country respectively. ![]() This has made it possible for several different lingua francas to exist across Nigeria. Nigeria is one huge and complex multilingual community with several different languages used within the public and private social space from city to city in Nigeria. Today the language has more speakers than any other language in the country. ![]() By the 1900s, the now stable English-based Naijá started spreading across the emerging Nigerian nation.Īnd by the time Nigeria gained her independence from Britain in 1960, the language had not only become popular among those who could not speak standard British English but became commonly spoken among the multilingual populations of the big cities. In time English, the language of the English, supplanted Portuguese as the major lexifier of Naijá. With the introduction of English into the Nigerian environment, the existing Portuguese-based pidgin of the Niger Delta started evolving in the new direction of the language of the new politically dominant group, the English. These changing interests came to mean change for the language situation of the Niger Delta. But between the 1700s and the 1800s, this initial interest metamorphosed from trade to religion, from religion to education, and to a colonial focus. The English were initially interested in trade. They were then followed by the French who visited the region intermittently till even after the English arrived in 1650 AD to take effective control of trade in the region. Since the Niger Delta region was made up of diverse communities of Annang, Edo, Efik, Ibibio, Igbo, Ijaw, Isoko, Itsekiri and Isoko speaking peoples with no known or well-established common language of communication, it was therefore easy for many Niger Deltans to learn the Portuguese-based pidgin of the Niger Delta at that time.Īfter the Portuguese left the region, the Dutch followed and traded at the eastern end of the region for about half a century. This, of course became crucial to the evolution of Naijá, which started out as a Portuguese-based pidgin in the Niger Delta. And this brought their language close to languages of the Niger Delta for an extended period of time. They established schools and churches where they taught Portuguese and the doctrines of Christianity in the region. They established strong diplomatic ties between some of the great kingdoms of the region and Portugal. They started trading with the people of the region from as early as 1469AD. The Portuguese were the first group of Europeans to visit and explore coastal Nigeria, especially around the area now known geo-politically as the Niger Delta. And this marked the beginning of an extended contact between the indigenous peoples of coastal Nigeria and visiting groups of Europeans. The country was first visited by European explorers and traders in the mid 15th Century. ![]() The country is an amalgamation of ethnically diverse groups of people speaking well over 500 different languages. Be sure to check the maintenance and care instructions for your pillow.Memory foam conforms to your head shape and offers a lot of support. These pillows are ideal if you like something that is more firm than fluffy. Instead of having a filling inside, it’s made from one solid piece of polyurethane. Memory foam is another popular kind of pillow.Down is another pillow filling people think about with allergens, but a lot of modern down is processed to remove allergens. After all, you don’t want to end up sneezing and coughing all night as a result of your pillow. This is especially critical if you suffer from allergies to materials like latex and buckwheat, both common pillow fillings. One of the most important elements to consider when buying a new pillow is the materials it is made from.If your mattress does not offer a lot of support and enables you to sink into it, then a thin pillow might be the best option for you. For example, if you have a firm mattress, you may enjoy a soft and fluffy pillow. Stomach sleepers should go with a thin pillow so that their spine and neck are at a neutral angle.īe sure to consider the type of mattress you have as well, as this will affect the comfort level of the pillow you need. If you’re a back sleeper, then you’ll need something that is flat and firm, as compared to side sleepers who can use a more fluffy pillow. This will affect the kind of head and neck support you will require. Start by considering which position you sleep in most often: on your back, on your side or on your stomach. There are many different types of pillows available, so knowing more about how you sleep will help determine the right kind of pillow for you.
